History and Traditions
The Royal Student Association (originally the Catholic Academic Student Association) Eumavia Lovaniensis, in short Eumavia, was founded in 1926 at the Catholic University of Louvain (today UCLouvain). It primarily brings together East-Belgian students from the cantons of Eupen, Malmedy and Sankt Vith. Its development has been significantly shaped by numerous political events of the pre- and post-war German-Belgian period and is often described as a "mirror of East-Belgian history".
About usThe association was originally founded after the model of Catholic German fraternities (Couleur-Verbindungen), whose traditions were also widespread in Louvain. After the split of the University of Louvain (1967-1968) in the course of the Belgian language dispute, the association decided to relocate together with the francophone students to Louvain-la-Neuve.
Throughout the 1970s, the Catholic German fraternity traditions were partly abandoned and adapted to Belgian student traditions.
Today the association is established in Louvain-la-Neuve and blends German and Belgian student traditions. Its goal remains to support East-Belgian students in university life, to preserve and showcase East-Belgian culture far from home, and to foster exchange with other student associations.
